Clinical Trials & Research

Rumour: Strep throat has been linked to mental health illnesses.

Truth: This is true. Streptococcal bacteria, the bacterium known for causing strep throat, has been associated with obsessive compulsive disorders (OCD) amongst children. Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a mental illness that is characterized by the need to perform repetitive activities and negatively impacts the individual’s quality of life.

A large longitudinal study published in the JAMA Psychiatry journal found that developing children were likely to develop OCD when they experienced strep throat once during their childhood. However, the study concluded that those without and with exposure to the streptococcal bacteria had an equal likelihood of increasing mental illness risk.
