(1738) French anatomist and surgeon Pierre-Joseph Desault is born. Known as one of the leading surgeons of France in his time, he developed a number of surgical instruments and introduced many improvements to surgical practises.

(1838) German neurologist and neuropsychiatrist Eduard Hitzig is born. He is known for studying the relationship between electricity and the brain.

(1892) American physician William P. Murphy is born. He shared the 1934 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for studying and determining a treatment for macrocytic anemia.
